Homework Policy in school





Overview
The purpose of homework for students is to foster their development of academic skills, concepts, and personal responsibility.

The guiding principles embedded in this policy are:
Homework assignments should improve student learning by reinforcing skills and concepts.
Homework assignments should develop personal responsibility.
Each child should be able to do the majority of their homework independently.
Parents should be able to assist their child with homework when necessary.
Homework practices should be consistent within a grade level.
Homework practices should build from one grade level to the next.
It is expected that assigned homework will be completed, and there will be a classroom process to check on the homework completion.

Homework Assignment Guidelines

Nursery to UKG:
Children will read, or be read to, 20 minutes per day.
There will be 5 to 10 minute additional formal written homework in each subject.
Homework should be similar/same to classwork so that parents can guide them easily.
Teachers may provide parents with a list of educational activities such as math and spelling games or Montessori based activities that they may choose to do with their children.

Grade1and 2:
Children will read, or be read to, 30 minutes per day.
There will be 5 to 10 minute additional formal written homework in each subject.
Homework should be similar/same to class work so that parents can guide them easily.
Teachers may provide parents with a list of educational activities such as math and spelling games that they may choose to do with their children.

Grade 3 to 5:
Students will read independently for 40 minutes. They will keep a reading log documenting their reading habits and progress.
There will be 10 to 20 minute additional formal written homework in at least 4 subjects.
Students may receive additional math's homework including the practice of math skills and concepts for up to 15 minutes per day.

Grade 6 to 8
Students will read independently for 50 minutes from a personal reading book or assigned class book. They will keep a reading log documenting their reading habits and progress.
There will be 15 to 30 minute additional formal written homework in at least 4 subjects.
Students may receive additional math and science homework including the practice of skills and concepts for up to 30 minutes per day.

Grade 9 and 10
Students will prepare daily routine for studying at home.
They will keep a reading log documenting their reading habits and progress.
Each subjects will be practiced at least 15 min per day.
Emphasis should be given to math and science with 60 min self-practice.
Students can make reading note or solve the problems from question bank or homework given by teachers.





RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS



1. School Attendance
Every student should come to school before 9:50 am. Student must send an application of leave for taking leave, absent for school due to illness or any other valid reason must present a written reason for the absence, from the parents/guardians to the school, when the student returns to school. It is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to send the letter to school and the class teacher should sign this letter as well.
2. Things needed for School
All necessary materials should be brought to school according to the school timetable. Other unnecessary materials are not allowed in the school. Drinking water bottle is also necessary along with learning materials.
3. School Uniform and Dress Code
·        Every student should attend school and other places representing the school, wearing the school uniform. Jewellery is not permitted in school except for an earring that is normally worn by girls.
·             Hair, of every student must be kept clean and neat & short in case of boys. Rollers, curlers, picks, rakes, forks in hair are prohibited. Unnatural colouring of hair or cutting of symbols or designs in hair is not permitted. Make-up is not permitted with the school uniform or when involved with any activity related to school. Dying and colouring of hair and applying hair gel are not permitted.
·             Nails should be cut short and clean.
·        Caps, hats or head coverings are NOT to be worn during the school time. Sunglasses are not to be worn on school grounds unless prescribed for medical purposes and verified with a doctor’s note, which must be presented to an administrator for approval.
4. Protection of School Properties and Rights of Other Students
·       Students are not allowed to harm any student, property and/or building inside or outside the school. Getting involved with others in such destructive behaviour is prohibited
·       Students are not permitted to take or use another students belonging without their prior permission
·        If a student does harm to another student, person, school property and building, the full responsibility of the action and damage has to be taken by that particular student and his/her parents/guardians.

5. Social, ethical and moral considerations for students
·       Every student must obey the laws and principles of the country  and respect cultural and moral values of the country.
·       Every student must respect and obey their parents.
·       Every student must obey and respect Principal, teachers, and staff of the school.
·       Every student should show respect and use appropriate language in communicating with others.
·       Every student should be punctual to school and use the time valuably.
·       Every student should respect their elders and show caring for the young.
·       Students are allowed out on the street before 9 am, after 5pm  and on holidays only with the permission from the parent/guardian.
6. Things Prohibited to Students
· Smoking, abuse of narcotics drugs.
·       Riding vehicles without the license.
·       Being in the school uniform other than for school activities.
· Use of mobile phones/iPod during school hours.
7. Taking action against student who breaches these rules and regulations
Action should be taken in accordance with the regulations imposed by the school. These include:
·       Giving advice and recording the problem.
·       Suspending from sports and other activities.
·       Giving hard punishment. Keeping student after school and completing a task given by the school.
·       Informing the parent and reminding the parent of their duty.
·       Suspending the student for a limited time.
·       Warning about expelling the student from school.
·       Expelling the student from school

Code of conduct for Teachers



Part I (Definition)
In this Code, unless the Context otherwise requires:
1.       Code of Conduct – refers the rules or terms and conditions with which teachers are required to comply.
2.       School – refers Salbas Sunrise English School, Tilakpur-2, Nawalparasi (My School)
3.       Principal – refers the administrative head of the school.
4.       Teacher –refers any person who is employed by the school that indicates teaching staffs.
5.       Misconduct –refers any unfavorable behavior, act or omission  classified in law, bylaw and directives  
6.       Student/Pupil - In the School system “student/pupil” is used for the learner in the Pre-primary to secondary level who is admitted in school.
7.       SMC – refers school management committee of the school.
8.       DEO /EDCU– refers district education office and other concerned government body.

Part II (Fundamental code of conduct)
1.       The teacher must enter the school in proper uniform.  The teacher is not allowed to enter the school in casual dress.
2.       The teacher must enter the school before 09:45 and leave after 16:15. Late entry or early exit is not entertained.
3.       Requests to leave school for limited time during school hours are not accepted. 
4.       The language for communication with the pupils is English. The school expects that the teacher enjoys speaking English.
5.       Teachers are exemplars. Politeness is expected. Increase in temper while answering to the students’ queries is not entertained. Moreover, the teacher will answer every query of the students until they understand; no matter how many times they ask.
6.       The teacher needs to be equipped with the knowledge of modern information technology. Preparing slides in MS PowerPoint and collecting motivational entertainment slides is essential as computer with projector is being used as teaching material in every class once in a week.
7.       Cell phones are required to be kept in silence during classroom teaching except it is used as teaching material.
8.       The teacher needs to make him/her available before and/or after school hours as per needs of school and/or students.
9.       The teacher will demonstrate the skills of ‘team work’. Cooperation among co-workers is taken as a tool for the school’s success.
10.    The teacher, without questions, will follow the schedule prepared to occupy the class in the absence of respective teacher.
11.    If majority of the students file case related to any kind of misconduct by the teacher, the school will take immediate actions. However, the teacher will get a chance to provide clarification or justify his actions.
12.    The teacher will perform the activities or duties, other than teaching, during school hours that the school assigns as per its need.
13.    Non-Discrimination
No teacher shall discriminate against a pupil/student on the grounds of sex, race, age, religion, disability, health status, custom, ethnic origin, background, socio-economic status or misunderstanding with a parent or guardian.
14.    Acts of Dishonour
i. No teacher shall involve himself/herself in any act that is likely to bring the teaching profession into disrepute.
ii. It shall therefore be the responsibility of every teacher to preserve the dignity and honour of his profession and also maintain his/her own dignity, honour and integrity.
15.     No act of a teacher shall have a negative psychological effect on a school child. Therefore, no teacher in the course of duty shall intimidate, insult, tease, harass, threaten, snub or discriminate against any child.
Part III (Academic)
16.    The teacher will prepare short lesson plans for each lesson s/he is teaching. It should be clearly reflected during teaching. A teacher shall prepare relevant and adequate teaching notes for his/her work in advance.
17.    As a class teacher, after entering the class, he/she should arrange the sitting arrangement in the rotation system giving priority to the disabled and weak students should check uniform, personal hygiene and make them up to date, must be alert about the regularity of the student.  
18.    Exercises
i. A teacher shall set adequate amount of written and practical exercises and give homework in all subjects that he/she teaches.
ii. A teacher shall mark and evaluate all written/practical exercises promptly and carefully.
iii. A teacher shall not make derogatory remarks in the exercise books of the child.
19.    The teacher needs to ensure that every student has gained the information and the knowledge as prescribed by the curriculum and can reflect them (competency based learning). It is the responsibility of the teacher to provide supportive classes if any student does not achieve the lessons’ goals during regular classes; unless the child is proved to have emotional and behavioural disorders, physical disabilities, developmental and/or other related types of disorders.
20.   Responsibility of the teacher is at its highest while checking students’ works. Every mistake counts. Mistakes/Errors are not tolerable; hence no justification/clarification will be expected. Moreover, the teacher will lose the moral ground to continue teaching in the school if the frequency is higher.
21.    The teacher will teach as per the routine prepared by the school.
22.   Students’ activity rate is expected to be higher in classes.
23.   Every single student should feel that s/he is given special care in class.
24.   Records of homework and classwork are to be updated daily. Moreover, the performances of the students in unit/weekly/monthly examinations are to be recorded and submitted to the Principal immediately.
Part IV (Leave/Absence)
25.   The teacher will understand that leave is a privilege, not a right.
26.   The teacher will get 18 days leave per annum not exceeding 2 days in a month. Among them 6 days will be causal leave. 6 days will be for the festivals and remaining 6 days will be sick leave.
27.   Only one member of staffs can be granted leave in a day.
28.   Leave should be requested the earlier day and be granted by the principal. Causal leave can be requested the same day via telephone or SMS (however, an application is to be submitted later) or application. However, it cannot be granted if any member of staff is already on leave.
29.    Any leave requests beyond these circumstances will not be accepted and be counted as absence.
30.   The absence will deduct one and half day’s wage.
31.    Leave, if not taken, will be paid together with the salary of each month.
Part V (Pay/Perks)
32.   The salary will be according to the school’s policy. Moreover, the government policy and teachers’ academic qualifications play a significant role in determining it.
33.   The school can provide extra allowance to the selected ones as per their overall performance and/or assigned extra responsibilities.
34.   The salary of the first month will be paid to the teacher on 15th of next month and so on by transferring to respective account of the teachers.

Part VI (Punishments)
35.   The school is a ‘Corporal Punishment Free Zone’.
36.   Students will not be abused in any form. Physical, psychological and sexual violence is avoided. Only positive measures have to be adopted.
37.   The teacher will be terminated from the job, then and there; once it is proved that s/he was involved in punishing or abusing the pupil/student or doing any misconduct.
Part VII (Miscellaneous)
38.    Teacher should help to create ‘Tobacco Free Zone”.
39.    Teacher should follow the rules and decision made by SMC, DEO and concerned authority.
40.    Offences Not Mentioned in the Code
Any act of misconduct by teachers not expressly mentioned in this Code will be according to nation’s current laws, bylaws and directives.
